Privacy Policy

Last updated: 17/04/2026

Thank you for visiting bytestark.com. Protecting and respecting your privacy is very important to us. This policy describes what data we collect, how we use it, the content rules that apply to authors, and the rights you have regarding your data. By using Bytestark you agree to the terms set out below.

1. Information collected

We collect data to deliver and improve our learning platform. Depending on how you use Bytestark, the information we may collect includes:

  • Account information: Username, email address, password (stored as a cryptographic hash, never in plain text), public display name, and optional profile details such as biography and profile picture.
  • Authored content: Lessons, courses, exercises, assessments, exams, sandboxes and articles you publish — including their titles, descriptions, questions, code snippets, and associated media.
  • Learning activity: Progress through lessons and courses, answers submitted to exercises and exams, ratings, comments, earned badges, and sandbox session history.
  • Technical data: IP address, browser type, device type, operating system, language preference, and referring URL.
  • Usage data: Pages visited, searches performed, time spent on each resource, and interactions used to analyze site performance.
  • Cookies and similar technologies: To keep you signed in, remember language preferences, and measure traffic.
  • Payment information: Where paid features are offered, billing details are processed by a third-party payment provider; we do not store full card numbers on our servers.

2. How we use the information collected

We use the information collected to:

  • Provide, operate and maintain the platform, including lessons, sandboxes, exercises, assessments and exams;
  • Personalize your experience, track your progress and issue badges or certificates you earn;
  • Display your authored content, profile and earned credentials on public parts of the platform;
  • Analyze site traffic and performance to improve stability and usability;
  • Communicate important updates, security notices and, only with your consent, promotional content;
  • Moderate content and enforce our community and content rules;
  • Prevent fraud, abuse of cloud sandboxes, and other misuse of the service;
  • Comply with legal and regulatory requirements.

3. Data sharing with third parties

We do not sell your personal data. We may share limited data with carefully selected third parties only where necessary for:

  • Providing our services through infrastructure partners (cloud hosting, sandbox environments, email delivery);
  • Processing payments where applicable;
  • Analytics and error monitoring, using aggregated or pseudonymized data where possible;
  • Compliance with applicable laws or lawful requests from authorities;
  • Protecting the rights, property, or safety of our website, our users, or the public.

All third-party processors are required to handle your data in line with applicable data protection laws and only for the purposes we specify.

4. Data retention

We retain personal data only for as long as is necessary to provide the service and to meet the purposes described in this policy. When you delete your account, we remove or anonymize the personal data associated with it within a reasonable period, except where retention is required by law, for fraud prevention, or to preserve the integrity of learning records of other users (for example, ratings or comments you left on third-party content may be anonymized rather than deleted).

Sandbox session data, including temporary files created inside a cloud lab, is discarded shortly after the session ends.

5. Data security

We take technical and organizational measures to protect your personal data against unauthorized access, alteration, disclosure, or destruction. These include encrypted transport (HTTPS), hashed passwords, access controls, isolated sandbox environments, and regular security reviews. Although we strive to protect your data, no method of transmission or storage on the internet is completely secure, and we cannot guarantee absolute security.

If you believe your account has been compromised, please contact us immediately.

6. Your rights

In accordance with applicable law (including the GDPR where it applies), you have the following rights regarding your personal data:

  • Right of access: You may request a copy of the personal data we hold about you.
  • Right to rectification: You may request correction of inaccurate or incomplete data.
  • Right to erasure: You may request the deletion of your personal data under certain circumstances.
  • Right to restriction: You may request the limitation of the processing of your data under certain conditions.
  • Right to data portability: You may request that we provide your data in a structured, commonly used, machine-readable format.
  • Right to object: You may object to the use of your personal data for purposes such as direct marketing.
  • Right to withdraw consent: Where processing is based on consent, you may withdraw it at any time without affecting the lawfulness of prior processing.
  • Right to lodge a complaint: You may contact the competent data protection authority in your country.

To exercise any of these rights, contact us at the address below. We will respond within the timeframe required by applicable law.

7. Cookies

bytestark.com uses cookies to keep you signed in, remember language preferences, analyze traffic, and improve site functionality. You can manage cookie settings in your browser at any time, but please note that disabling essential cookies may affect your ability to use the platform.

We use the following broad categories of cookies:

  • Essential cookies: Required for authentication, CSRF protection, and core site functionality.
  • Preference cookies: Remember your language and display settings.
  • Analytics cookies: Help us understand how the platform is used so we can improve it.

8. Content rules and author conduct

Bytestark is a learning platform dedicated to technical and educational content. To keep the community safe and useful for everyone, the following rules apply to every piece of content published on the platform (including lessons, courses, exercises, exams, assessments, sandboxes, articles, comments and profile fields):

Prohibited content. Content that is illegal, misleading, hateful, pornographic, or otherwise unrelated to the platform's educational purpose will be removed, and the authors responsible may be permanently banned from Bytestark without prior notice.

More specifically, you must not publish, host or distribute content that:

  • Violates any applicable law or regulation, or infringes third-party rights (including intellectual property, trademarks and privacy);
  • Is misleading, deceptive, plagiarized, or knowingly contains false technical information presented as fact;
  • Promotes hatred, harassment, discrimination or violence against individuals or groups;
  • Contains pornographic, sexually explicit, or gratuitously violent material;
  • Is unrelated to programming, technology, or the educational purpose of the platform;
  • Contains malware, exploits, credential-harvesting code, or instructions aimed at attacking real systems you do not own or are not authorized to test;
  • Encourages or facilitates abuse of the sandbox environment, mining of cryptocurrencies, spam, or any other resource-abusive activity;
  • Impersonates another person or organization, or misrepresents your affiliation with them.

We reserve the right, at our sole discretion, to remove content that violates these rules, unlist content pending review, suspend or terminate accounts, and permanently ban repeat or serious offenders. Where required by law, violations may be reported to the competent authorities.

9. Sandbox usage and limits

Bytestark provides cloud-based sandbox environments so you can practice in real tools without setting anything up locally. Because sandboxes consume real compute, storage and network resources, their availability is subject to fair-use limits.

Sandbox allowances may change at any time. We reserve the right to adjust session duration, the number of concurrent sessions, available technologies, monthly usage quotas, and any other sandbox-related limits at any time and without individual notice. Changes apply from the moment they are published.

When using sandboxes you also agree that:

  • Sandbox environments are intended solely for learning and lawful experimentation;
  • You will not use them to attack, scan, or otherwise target third-party systems without explicit authorization;
  • You will not use them for cryptocurrency mining, hosting public services, spamming, or any other activity that abuses the service's resources;
  • Files and state inside a sandbox are ephemeral and may be deleted at the end of a session or during maintenance;
  • We may terminate an active session if it exceeds its allowance, shows signs of abuse, or poses a risk to platform stability or other users.

10. Children and minors

Bytestark is not directed at children under the age of 13 (or the equivalent minimum age in your country). We do not knowingly collect personal data from children under this age. If you believe that a child has provided us with personal data, please contact us so we can promptly delete it.

11. International data transfers

Bytestark operates globally. Your data may be processed on servers located outside your country of residence, including in jurisdictions that may not offer the same level of data protection as yours. Where we transfer personal data internationally, we rely on appropriate safeguards such as standard contractual clauses.

12. Changes to the privacy policy

We reserve the right to update this privacy policy periodically. Any changes will be posted on this page with an updated 'Last updated' date, and in case of major changes we will notify you via email or through a notice on the platform before the changes take effect. Continued use of the platform after a change constitutes acceptance of the updated policy.
